Former Prime Minister and GERB’s leader Boyko Borisov reported that Migration is not a national but a common European problem. The increased migration pressure to Europe needs Bulgaria to resist together for common borders.

Borisov noted this during a meeting with Karl Nehamer, Chancellor of Austria, on January 24. During the conversation, he stated that GERB is the party that leads all the parliamentary processes that confirmed Bulgaria’s Euro-Atlantic orientation.

As an example, Borisov pointed out the adopted laws on 100% diversification of Russian nuclear fuel, the refusal to import Russian gas, Lukoil, the provision of military assistance to Ukraine, the construction of two new IP-1000 atomic reactors, as well as the European integration processes of the Republic of Northern Macedonia and the Western Balkan countries.

Statistics show that the Migration flow across the nation has increased by 3.30 per cent. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict is the main driver of Migration to Bulgaria and the rest of Europe. In order to survive the constant Russian attacks on the country, more than 5,000 000 Ukrainian migrants sought asylum in Bulgaria.

According to research made public by the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA), the number of asylum applications received by EU+ countries during the first half of 2022 increased by 68%—or around 406 000—when compared to the same time in 2021.

During the meeting, Borisov also expressed hope that the common European commitment to support Ukraine and the Ukrainian people will
continue. He stressed that Russian aggression has no place in the modern democratic world. The war is about to make its first anniversary on February 24.

GERB’s leader proclaimed that Karl and him were adamant that the parties of the European People’s Party should always support each other. “We are convinced that only together we can solve Europe’s problems and the challenges facing the democratic world”, said Borisov.
