87 COVID patients in Bulgaria tests positive for Omicron variant

In the European country Bulgaria, an additional eighty-seven (87) cases of the Omicron COVID-19 variant have been recorded by the healthcare facilities, as per the data shared by the National Centre for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (NCIPD), as of May 11, 2022.

A total of 87 tests were conducted on the COVID-19 patients, and all of them tested positive for the Omicron strain. These samples were taken during the time period from March 30 to April 14 in the 13 districts of the European nation.

The highest number of the COVID-19 patient samples were derived from Sofia city, further followed by Varna district (17) and Pleven district (seven).

The data states that as of April 26, at least three COVID patients from the samples taken lost their lives to the virus; meanwhile, a total of eleven (11) patients were in the hospital facilities. Of these, at least 23 patients were undergoing treatment at their respective homes, and a total of 50 patients got recovered as of April 26.

According to NCIPD, BA.2 subvariant of the Omicron strain has been recorded among the new 65 cases. This computes for around 74.7% of the total samples. On the other hand, the remaining samples contain eight different subvariants of the Omicron strain, which includes – four cases of BA.1.1 and 11 cases of the BA.2.9 subvariant.

The COVID-19 situation in Bulgaria is witnessing an improvement, but still, the country remains among those with the lowest number of COVID-19 vaccination rates among the regions.

Till now, a total of 2,057,158 individuals in Bulgaria who have taken their required number of the WHO-approved COVID-19 vaccines and are now in the category of fully vaccinated population. This number of individuals accounts for around 29.7% of the total targeted eligible population.

On the other hand, nearly 10.8% of the Bulgarian population is fully vaccinated and has taken their booster shots.
