Bulgaria: Prices of medicines increases by 10%

Sofia, Bulgaria: The prices of medicines in Bulgaria witnessed an increase of approximately 10%, as stated by Nikolai Kostov – the chairman of the Association of Owners of Pharmacies, medicines and medical goods.

Explaining the reason behind this, he asserted, “Our suppliers are hiking the prices, some for the second time. The good news is that the relative increase is less – below 10% on average. We are constantly receiving new prices from suppliers, and we are re-evaluating the goods”.

He then notified that for some of the medicines, the price had soared by 15%.

“There is a clear transition from buying more expensive to cheaper products”, underscored Kostov, adding that there is still a shortage of medications.

“For the present time, there are a total of 68; there used to be over 300 types of drugs for which there is a shortage. There is an obvious lack of antibiotics”, Kostov then stated.

Apart from this, he shared his personal experience and cited the prices of medicines he is prescribed.

“I require the drugs first for the blood. Second – for the heart. Third – for the prostate. Fourth – I get cramps timely. I get the so-called GRD – gastrointestinal reflux disease. Last year I had the same problem. With a drug of 5 leva and 20 cents, and my health got better. Now they have given me one for 120 leva”.

The price of Kostov’s medicine has increased by BGN 5 to 10. The medicines are quite more expensive in the city as compared to that in the village.

As per to the unverified information, the prices of the medicines might also come across a hike of 30%. Speaking on this, Kostov stated that he is not sure about the news and is still seeking validation on the matter.
