Castries, Saint Lucia: Ernest Hilaire, Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister of Saint Lucia, announced that Jounen Kweyol (Creole Day) will be celebrated on October 22, 2023, at 5 AM.

It’s a cultural festival of Saint Lucia celebrated on the last Friday of October and the last Sunday of October, respectively. The festival has been held annually since 1984.

DPM Hilaire reported through his official Facebook account that the festival will be celebrated at Bananes Grounds with a lot of activities, including beer drinking, greasy pig, woola laba, dominoes, biscuit eating and many more.

He invited all the residents of Castries Constituency to celebrate the Jounen Kweyol with their families and friends, participating in various activities scheduled for October 22.

Jounen Kwéyòl (Creole Day) is one of the most popular cultural events in Saint Lucia. The locals celebrate this festival showcase different elements of their heritage and culture on the last Friday or last Sunday of October.

Local dishes are also a main speciality of this festival. A dish known as Bouillon, prepared with lentils/red beans and pumpkin soup with pork or beef, is mainly served.

The month of October is designated as ” ” in Saint Lucia – heralding the call for nationals and friends of Saint Lucia, to celebrate the cultural richness and diversity of Saint Lucian creole heritage.

Jounen Kwéyòl is usually celebrated by wearing the national dress of the island, which consists of the Wob Dwiete and jip ensemble for women and a Madras jacket (a particular type of plaid material), a white shirt, black slacks, and a red sash for men.’

Currently, people prefer using Madras to create less formal versions of traditional clothing. This event is also celebrated at schools, where students can dress in their Madras outfits and participate in the activities. This has become a custom in the islands of Saint Lucia.
