Sofia, Bulgaria: The Sofia Municipality started the construction of a new metro station on the boulevard “Pancho Vladigerov”. Yordanka Fandakova, Mayor of Sofia, noted that with it, 12,000 residents from Obela and Modern Suburbs will be able to use the fastest and most environmentally friendly transport – the metro. This also means nearly 6,000 fewer cars in traffic and 1,500 tonnes of harmful emissions saved annually.

The new metro station will be the fourth intermodal station – a convenient connection of the subway with the train, (P) the network (trains from Dragoman, Kyustendil and Bozurishte) and bus transport.

The mayor of Sofia highlighted that for 15 years, the Sofia Municipality has built 42 km of the metro, which is 80% of the currently operating metro. With the opening of the new sections through Poduyane, Slatina and Obela, over half a million people will be able to travel by metro every day.

The future stop at Obelia will serve as a transfer between Line 1 and Line 2 of the subway. In addition to a new station, the construction of a 900 m tunnel connected to the Obela depot is in progress. During the building, the closure of Blvd. is not planned. Pancho Vladigerov Street “Obela Shose” and neighbourhood streets in “Obela 1”.

The Sofia Municipality also started the construction of the Boulevard piercing, “Todor Kableshkov”, between the street Louis Ayer & the blvd “The Black Top”. This is a 1.4 km completely new boulevard, part of the inner city ring, along with the boulevard. Philip Kutev.

This is the last section of the direct route, which connects Boulevard “Bulgaria”, boulevard “Simeonovsko Shose” and one of the major projects of my mayor’s program. With it, the Sofia Municipality attempts to unload traffic in southern Sofia, remove direct crossings from the city centre and reduce traffic jams.
