Sofia, Bulgaria: The Prime Minister of Bulgaria – Kiril Petkov, held a meeting with the European Neighbourhood and Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi today May 19, 2022. The information about the meeting was shared by the Government press service on Thursday.  

Both the dignitaries shared issues on the European agenda, which also included – the union’s policy in the region of Southeastern Europe and the war in Ukraine.

The meeting was held during the official visit of Varhelyi. Apart from this, the Bulgarian Prime Minister stated and assured that the European country would continue to be proactive regarding the stability and prosperity of Southeastern Europe.  

In addition, the Public health doctor of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Margaret Harris, updated on the health condition of Ukraine amid the Russian military invasion. 

Harris, in her statement, asserted, “The war in Ukraine raised the risk of infectious diseases. In Mariupol, where extensive damage to water systems has mixed water with sewage, we are very concerned about the risk of cholera”.   

The UN Migration Agency asserted, “The war in Ukraine has internally displaced over 8 million people. People need food, medicines, health care, information support, and protection from abuse and exploitation”. 

The total number of people forced to flee due to the war is now close to 14 million. Over 52% of displaced households have a child. Access to medicine, food, hygiene & health services remain key needs 

In eastern Ukraine, families suffer amid continuous shelling. They urgently need humanitarian aid. 90% of Mariupol is destroyed by fighting. UNICEF is providing aid with medical supplies, water, and food to +9,000 people evacuated from Mariupol.
