UK’s Defence Ministry created a 30-minute documentary on YouTube on an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at Ukrainian tankers training on Challenger 2 tanks in the UK, who have completed their training and returned home to continue the fight against Russian invasion.

The training began shortly after it was announced in January that the UK would hand over 14 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine, along with ammunition and spare parts.

British military instructors have taught the Armed Forces of Ukraine military personnel for the past weeks how to manage and fight enemy tanks. The training included how to command, drive and work together as a crew of a Challenger 2 tank and effectively identify and strike targets.

The Challenger 2 tank marks a landmark shift in the capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, providing them with better protection for their crews and some of the most modern and advanced firing systems in the world.

UK Defence Minister Ben Wallace said: “It is inspiring to see the determination of the Ukrainian soldiers who have completed training in British Challenger 2 tanks on British soil. They return to the homeland better equipped, but not to less danger. We will continue to support them and do our best to support Ukraine for as long as it takes”.

Lieutenant Colonel John Stone, who led the training mission, said: “It was an honour for the Combat Maneuvers Center team to conduct this training for our Ukrainian partners.

He added, “We were all extremely impressed by the level of competence demonstrated and had no doubt that our friends will use the Challenger 2 tanks most effectively in future battles when they fight for their homeland.”

Ukrainian tank commander who starred in the film said, “I fight for my future, for my country’s future and my family’s future. We are going to fight. This tank is like a diamond to us; I think it’s the best tank in the world”.

Great Britain sends Challenger 2 tanks, which the Armed Forces of Ukraine will soon receive. Ukraine’s support from the international community has been unwavering after Russia’s full-scale invasion over a year ago, on February 24, 2022.

The UK Defence Ministry ensured their support for Ukraine would last as long as needed. The Ministry will continue to maintain relations with Ukraine after that to help them rearm, to help prepare it for defence.
