Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, appreciated the residents of St. Peter constituency for their patience and cooperation towards rectifying the water situation.
On June 3, 2023, the St Kitts Water service department informed that water service had been interrupted at Upper Monkey Hill due to extremely low levels in the Stapleton Reservoir.
This is mainly due to maintenance work undertaken on Friday and the ongoing Lack of Rainfall. Minister Drew remarked that the island country is experiencing dry weather due to climate change, and maintenance work was conducted on Friday to address the water issues.
The water shortage is expected to continue in the upcoming days. Through his official Facebook account, Minister Drew urged the citizens of the St. Peter constituency to limit the amount of water consumption and manage the usage until the problem is solved.
He expressed that the government of St Kitts and Nevis understands the difficulties the country and its citizens have faced regarding the water situation due to dry weather. However, it continues to work diligently to rectify the problem to provide better access to potable water.
Minister Drew said he is earnest about resolving the water shortage issue as soon as possible. He urged the citizens to reduce the usage of water on a daily basis and informed that the company BEAD is already on site in Cayon, and soon the water problem will be over.
The Water Services Department notified consumers at Upper Monkey Hill that the problem emerged due to a lack of rainfall this year, lowering the levels of Stapleton Reservoir.
They urged the citizens to remain calm and reduce water consumption until the problem is solved. The department primarily suggested citizens of St. Peter reserve drinking water first and expressed that the department is doing everything possible to improve the storage level, including trucking water to the tank.
St Kitts and Nevis Water Department believe that lowering the expenditure on the water can accelerate the water level to rise and reach the normal state. They apologized for the inconvenience and thanked the citizens of St. Peter for their cooperation and understanding.
