Karlovo Floods: Volunteers assist to liberate villages, deliver food and water

The assistance provided by the volunteers brought a great relief to the victims in flood-affected regions.

Emil Kabaivanov, the mayor of Karlovo, informed that multiple organisation was established to deploy volunteer groups in each of the three villages. Food, water, and other basics are given out from selected locations which are safer and more convenient. The mayor of Karlovo also announced that the collection of funds is still in progress as many people came forward to assist in helping the victims affected by the floods.

He explained the main objective of the activist was to create new beds for the three rivers through the three settlements – Slatina, Bogdan and Karavelovo which almost got demolished by recent floods that occurred due to heavy rainfall.

Volunteers and military personnel are helping collectively to clean public buildings and private homes containing tons of mud, trees and other materials. More than 70 units of equipment of various calibres are present in the villages to accelerate the rescue procedure.

Recently, teams from the Power Companies arrived in the villages and were working to restore the electrical system, which is expected to be activated by the end of the day. The riverbed of the Stryama river is completely restored, and the flood water is pumped out from the houses.

Flooding in the Karlovo region has resulted in more than EUR 36 million in losses. The state Government is raising funds to assist the victims who lost their homes and provided containers for temporary residence.

The “Workshop for Civic Initiatives” Foundation, the Bulgarian Donor Forum, and the National association of volunteers in the Republic of Bulgaria are coordinating a campaign to raise money to buy furniture and household electrical appliances for the flood-affected families in Karlovo. The association also supports students seeking to resume their studies.
