The Soviets monuments in Sofia are a sign of Russian victory over Turks and German. The giant Monument shows the Bulgarian people thanking the Soviet liberators. They were built in the communist era.

Due to Russian aggression over Ukraine, several people find it disturbing to have a Soviet army monument in their country, while some respect it due to historical events.

That’s why people in Sofia choose to defend Soviet monuments from being demolished or vandalized. Since the invasion of Ukraine began, several Bulgarian people have shown support to Russia and opposed the Bulgarian government’s decision to send arms and weapons to Ukraine.

The Bulgarian people once also defended Soviet monuments from getting vandalized by Ukrainian refugees who fled Ukraine and came to Bulgaria due to war.

Since the invasion began, several times, got spoiled by protestors by painting Ukrainian flag colours or spilling red colour on them, demonstrating blood. Bulgarian residents are camping and taking turns to watch the Monument to the Soviet Army to protect it from vandalism by Ukrainian supporters.
