Sofia, Bulgaria: In a significant leap forward for Bulgaria’s defence capabilities, Chief of Defense Admiral Emil Eftimov announced the imminent arrival of eight cutting-edge F-16 fighter jets from the United States in 2025.

The decision to expedite the acquisition is crucial, ensuring delivery well before 2030, marking a strategic move to enhance the nation’s aerial defence capabilities.

Admiral Eftimov provided insights into the meticulous preparation behind this initiative, revealing plans for a total of 16 aircraft and the comprehensive training of 32 airmen in the United States.

The rigorous methodology employed by the American Air Force will transform these individuals into a highly skilled and efficient operational defence force.

Furthermore, 84 engineering and technical personnel are set to undergo extensive training in the U.S., solidifying Bulgaria’s technological prowess in maintaining and optimizing these state-of-the-art assets.

In addition to bolstering aerial capabilities, Admiral Eftimov emphasized advancements in land forces, highlighting the acquisition of Stryker’s Armored Vehicles as a significant stride forward.

These vehicles will be assembled in Bulgaria after arriving in parts, accompanied by comprehensive training programs for ground troops, ensuring a seamless integration of this formidable asset.

Turning attention to infrastructure developments, Admiral Eftimov underscored the vital role of NATO’s eastern flank, allocating BGN 100 million for road and railway infrastructure.

This aligns with the government’s commitment to invest 6 billion euros in enhancing the rapid deployment capabilities of allied troops.

Collaborative efforts with neighbouring countries were also a focal point of Admiral Eftimov’s briefing. He disclosed joint operations with Romania and Turkey, involving the disposal of over 12 mines in the Black Sea.

However, he clarified that there is currently no decision on the participation of Bulgarian officers in operations in the Red Sea.

Addressing recent incidents involving captive compatriots in the Red Sea, Admiral Eftimov stressed the importance of discretion and diplomacy for successful resolutions.

Notably, Bulgaria had received an invitation from the United States Naval Forces for participation in the operation even before the incidents involving the “Galaxy Leader” and the “Ruen” ships.

The proactive approach taken by Bulgaria in fortifying its defence capabilities reflects a commitment to regional security and NATO obligations.

The acquisition of F-16 fighter jets, Strykers Armored Vehicles, and investments in infrastructure underscore Bulgaria’s dedication to maintaining a robust defence posture.

As geopolitical dynamics evolve, Bulgaria’s strategic alliances and technological advancements position the nation as a key player in fostering regional stability and security.
