Twenty-four teams participated in the International Commando Challenge competition, which took place in memory of the five Bulgarian soldiers killed in the assassination at an India base in Kerbala, who were honoured with a minute’s silence. This is the fourth edition being held today and tomorrow at the ground in the village of Michkovtsi in Gabrovo under the motto “Remember the killed”.
Twenty-four teams will demonstrate their tactical obstacle course crossings, long-range shooting, first aid and wounded evacuation skills. On the first day, forces will be measured by 15 law enforcement and army teams, and on the second, nine groups of civilians.
Deputy Regional Governor Daniela Marinova, Commander of the Land Forces Major General Deyan Deshkov and Commander of the Joint Special Operations Command Major General Yavor Mateev honoured the event.
Marinova stressed that this was a significant event for the region, marking the 20th anniversary of the assassination at the Bulgarian base in the Iraqi city of Kerbala. The Gabrovo Municipality reminded that on December 27, 2003, a truck bomb crashed into an India base, taking five human victims: Lieutenant Nikolay Sareev, Captain Georgi Kachorin, Senior Sergeant Ivan Indjov, Junior Sergeant Anton Petrov and Private Svilen Kirov. Posthumously, they were awarded the title “Knight of the Honor” and promoted in rank.
“I bow to the courage, bravery and manhood of these dignified Bulgarians who risk their lives not only to protect the order and borders of the country but also by serving far beyond the border. Such a vocation requires discipline, courage, and the ability to “overcome” your instinct for self-preservation in the name of debt. This feat is performed daily and deserves our recognition. “, the deputy regional governor said.
She thanked the organizers, Metal Security Group, Alpha-Metal Sports Club, former SOBT employees, and the Joint Special Operations Command and wished the participants success and a fair race.
