The FISU World University Games are held every two years in different cities. This celebration of International University Sports and Culture draws thousands of student-athletes together to compete, making it one of the world’s largest and most prestigious multisport events.

Embracing FISU’s motto of excellence of mind and body, the Summer Edition of the FISU World University Games incorporates educational and cultural aspects, encouraging student-athletes worldwide to combine high sporting performance with their intellectual pursuits.

The twelve-day competition program of the Games includes fifteen compulsory sports. To stay at the forefront of sports development and innovation, organizers can consist of up to three optional sports from the FISU-recognized sports list and the FISU World University Championship program in their event. So on the 31st edition, the world will see 18 sports and 269 events.

As the first world-class sporting event in western China, the World University Games are already helping bring an even more lively sports and university atmosphere to Chundu.
“Twenty per cent of the world’s students are in China, and the National University Sports Federation has a clear and proven ability to conduct student sporting events of the highest quality,” said FISU President Oleg Maticin.

The opening ceremony of the 31st summer edition of the World University Games will be held on Friday at the Dong’an Lake Sports Park in Chundu. The overall architectural design of the stadium is designed to resemble a spacecraft, a circular UFO.

Chengdu 2021 FISU mascot is “Rongbao”. Shaped as a giant panda with a torch, Rongbao reminds people of Sichuan – the giant panda’s natural habitat and capital Chundu, where the Research Base for Breeding Large Panda is located.

In 2003, The Tegu Summer Universiade saw a record-breaking 174 countries compete in the Republic of Korea. A decade later, the Kazan Summer Universiade 2013 attracted a record 11,759 participants.
