Diamond girls with press conference on first day of official program in Japan

On June 26, 2023, the national rhythmic gymnastics team (ensemble) of the Republic of Bulgaria, which won gold medals during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, held a press conference for the Japanese media at the Tokyo Olympic Museum on the first day of their official program in Japan.

Diamond girls Simona Dyankova, Stephanie Kiryakova, Madeleine Radukanova, Laura Traats and Erika Zafirova are on a visit to Japan at the invitation of Murayama in Yamagata Prefecture, which hosted our national rhythmic gymnastics team during the Tokyo Olympics.

Before the press conference, the Vice-Chairman of the Japan Gymnastics Federation with Rhythmic Gymnastics, Mrs Yoko Hasegawa, cited an example of the Diamond Girls with their determination, hard work, but also modesty and nobility, who serve as an example for the younger generation.

Bulgarian Ambassador to Tokyo, Mrs Marieta Arabadzhieva, highlighted the role of rhythmic gymnastics in creating bridges of friendship between the two countries. 

A welcome was also read from the Chairman of the Bulgarian Federation for Rhythmic Gymnastics, Mr Iliana Raeva, who thanked the city of Murayama for always the warm welcome of our team and highlighted the contribution of camps held in the town to the successful preparation of our competitors.

The role of the current President of the International Gymnastics Federation and member of the Japanese Olympic Committee, Mr Morinari Watanabe and a great friend of Bulgaria, in strengthening ties in the field of artistic gymnastics between Bulgaria and Japan was also emphasized.

During the event, the Diamond Girls signed their autographs on photos that were donated to the Japanese Gymnastics Federation and the Japanese Olympic Museum.

The photo for the Japanese Olympic Museum was exhibited in one of the museum halls today. The event is organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Tokyo, with the assistance of the Japanese Gymnastics Federation and the Japanese Olympic Museum.

Following the press conference, the Diamond girls headed to Murayama town to participate in the fourth Rose Camp 2023 training camp.

The program also includes:

  • The unveiling of a memorial plaque honouring Bulgarian gymnasts’ Olympic victory.
  • Meetings with city residents.
  • Visits to local schools and rhythmic gymnastics clubs.
