Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister meets Azerbaijan counterpart

Sofia, Bulgaria: The Foreign Affairs Minister of the Balkan state – Teodora Genchovska, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan – Jeyhun Bayramov, today, May 31, 2022.

Several matters of mutual concern were discussed among both foreign ministers.

Both countries share friendly diplomatic ties in several sectors such as – political, socio-economic, cultural and other spheres. Bulgaria recognized the independence of Azerbaijan on January 14, 1992. Meanwhile, bilateral ties between both countries were established on June 5, 1992.

The Embassy of Bulgaria in Baku has been functioning since December 1999, while the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Sofia was established in the year 2005. Often the Presidents of both countries pay a visit to the other state.

Azerbaijan and Bulgaria founded a joint Commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation on May 28, 1999. Since its establishment, a total of five meetings have been conducted, which were in the year – 2000, 2004, 2008, 2016 and 2018, of which the last meeting was conducted in the capital city of Bulgaria – Sofia.

The basis of economic cooperation between both nations is energy. Began from 2020, 1 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas will be delivered to Bulgaria via the Greece-Bulgaria gas pipeline (IGB) as part of the Southern gas corridor.
