Plovdiv, Bulgaria: National Awards “Christo G. Danov” for contribution to Bulgarian literary culture” will be presented tonight at 5 pm in Plovdiv at a solemn ceremony in the yard of the house, a museum of the famous Bulgarian Renaissance. The prize will be presented in 8 categories.

The event is organized by the Ministry of Culture and Plovdiv Municipality, who are co-founders of the Award for Contribution to Bulgarian Literary Culture. The competition has been held annually since 1999.

Nominated participants traditionally receive their honours on the occasion of May 24 – the Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian alphabet, education and culture, and Slavic literature.

The prizes are determined on a competitive basis in two rounds. There are eight awards in the categories: “Bulgarian Publishing House”, “Author of Bulgarian Fiction”, “Translator of Fiction”, “Author in the Field of Humanities”, “Authors of Children’s Edition”, “Artist or Book Design and Design”, “Presentation of the Bulgarian Book” and “Library Work”.

The grand prize is for an overall contribution to the national literary culture. The award winners will be presented with a diploma, a small plastic and a cash prize, and the nominees will receive a certificate.

Christo Gruev Danov was born on August 27, 1828, in Klisura village- under the ottoman empire during that time. He was a Bulgarian teacher, enlightener and book publisher of the Bulgarian National Revival who is recognized as the father of organized book publishing, generally called Bulgarian Gutenberg. After the liberation of Bulgaria in 1878 from the Ottoman Empire, Danov became mayor of Plovdiv.

His house in Plovdiv is one of the one of the regional Historical Museum’s expositions in Plovdiv, primarily dedicated to the history of Bulgarian Publishing.
