Dominica: The Goundbreaking Ceremony was observed for the Cabrits Marina at Bell Hall, Portsmouth on Saturday, May 25, 2024. The ceremony began at 4:00 p.m. in the evening.
Prime Minister stated that it is a moment of occasion and the construction of the project symbolises a significant step forward for the Portsmouth community. He stated that for the entire north, local economy they share a long-held vision for the country’s prosperity.
He said that they held fast to dream of marina for the area to take advantage of the natural features of the bay and strengthen the tourism activity, particularly in the north of the island.
According to the prime minister, the range of developments has shown unwavering commitment to Dominica’s development with a successful construction of the world class hotel.
He stated further that they are now confident that their friend Muhammad and his arranged team will now deliver to the people of Portsmouth and the surrounding communities. Marina of the highest standards will be a shining example of sustainable development in Dominica and the region.
PM Skerrit assured the Dominican people that the government is in possession of a feasibility assessment which considers the preservation of the wetlands in the area based on the study. The study is called the Marina project which is designed with the sustainability in mind.
With the launch of Cabrits Marina Dominica ensures that they protect and embrace the natural surroundings. For the upcoming generations they are underscoring the commitment to environmental stewardship.
The government has proven that the environmental considerations are important to them and they keep on seeking to strike the right balance between the development and conservation. However, the project is no different.
The development of the marina in the area marks a turning point for the town of Portsmouth. It has always been a community brimming with potential to harness the extraordinary capacity of the Portson people and will bring unprecedented growth to the area.
With the recently opened institutions such as American Canadian School of Medicine and the intercontinental hotel and spa, they are witnessing a resurgence of the vibrancy of the town.
At the ceremony, PM Skerrit was conjoined by the Joseph Isaac, speaker of the assembly Mrs. Isaac, former president Charles Saver and Mrs. Saver, Justice Williams, Minister for Tourism Denise Charles Pemberton and Minister of Agriculture and the parliamentary representative for the Portsmouth for the Cottage Constituency Roland Ray.
Earlier, Prime Minister Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit announced occurrence of the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the much-talked Marina for Portsmouth, during the announcement of Parliament.
He confirmed that the vision for the Marina has always been in the plans for the development of Portsmouth and the Cabrits.
Moreover, Portsmouth is considered to have the best geographical and natural amenities for a Marina.
PM Skerrit further revealed that it is a major project and by the Grace of God it is happening on May 25th. He also mentioned that there will also be the construction of a cruise village and a new cargo port that will be placed at the Canefield Industrial Site.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Minister of Tourism, International Transport and Maritime Initiatives for the Government of Dominica – Denise Charles said that the goundbreaking ceremony of Cabrits Marina is completed.
They will soon commence Timbo’s Villas, in progress of the Ocean Edge Resort, Hilton Tranquility Beach Resort, Marriott Anichi Resort and Sanctuary Eco Resort.
The Minister called upon Dominicans and asked them to cherish the charm of their island. She added not to wait on the NEP to keep the roads and drains clean.
Charles remarked that every Dominican should be awarded and should practice proper garbage disposal and make efforts to show that they are not only green in their natural beauty but are also eco-friendly and practice it.
She added considerably that due this the geothermal project and using renewable energy is a part of their story to promote the destination. It demonstrates their commitment towards the environment and promise to become the first climate resilient nation.
The tourism minister added that in the North, they are exploring the potential of green hydrogen and creating even more opportunities for Dominican Citizens. Along with this, Dominica is also establishing the first sperm whale reserve in the world, which is a commitment to protect the marine ecosystem.
