The President of the European Union, Ursula von der Leyen,
held a telephonic conversation with the President of Ukraine, Vlodomir Zelenskyy, on June 17, Friday. EU has proposed to grant candidate status to the war-torn country amid the Russian military invasion.

While providing the information about the conversation, the EU President asserted, “I was very moved by President Vlodomir Zelenskyy’s kind words over the phone today, following our recommendation to grant Ukraine the candidate status. The Ukrainians can count on the European Commission’s constant support as they move along the path to the European Union”.

Ukraine, on February 28 2022, applied for membership of the European Union. The council has requested the EC to compile opinions on the three countries’ membership applications.

Meanwhile, EC tweeted, “The European Commission recommends to the Council that Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia are given the perspective to become members of the European Union”.

Although, a decision will be made on the application of the EU on June 23, 2022.

The war between Russia and Ukraine has now entered its 115th day, taking thousands of lives. The war has forced millions of Ukraine nationals to flee the war land.

“Together with the President of the EU, we’ve coordinated steps on the eve of the historic European Council session to be held on June 23-24. I’m grateful to the EU leaders for their faith in Ukraine’s European future!”, stated the Ukraine President.

“I’ve continued dialogue with the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council. Expressed gratitude to the EC President for the positive conclusion of the EC on granting Ukraine candidate status. Ukraine will carry on with the course of pro-European reforms”, he then added.
