As per the recent data shared by the United Nations Refugee Agency, worldwide, more than 100 million refugees were forced to leave their normal lives, taking shelter in different countries.
Speaking on the huge margin and rights of refugees, the Secretary-General of the United Nations – António Guterres, asserted, “100 million people have now been forced to flee their homes. This is not a refugee crisis – refugees are not the cause. This is a political crisis, and it will only be solved with solidarity and political will”.
Meanwhile, the official Twitter handle of the UNHCR tweeted, “100 million people #ForcedToFlee represents a dark day for humanity. A milestone we hoped we’d never have to mark. Too many lives torn apart. There are no winners in war, conflict or persecution”.
Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at UNHCR underscores by saying that the number of people who have been forced to flee their homes has now crossed the staggering milestone of 100 million for the first time on record. This alarming figure is a wake-up call on the need for more action to promote peace and prevent and resolve forced displacement.
“Every one of them has a story of loss, suffering, unfulfilled potential, and a family who loves them. A devastating human statistic, but also a political crisis is search of political solutions”, stated Deputy High Commissioner, UN Refugee Agency – Kelly T. Clements.
These refugees left their countries amid war, violence, persecution or discrimination with the motive of saving their and loved ones’ lives.
On the other end, the UN High Commissioner – Filippo Grandi, has called this huge number of displacements a “terrible indicator of the state of the world”, adding, “The quest for solutions to their plight must continue”.
UNHCR is the body of the UN which is continuously trying to make this world a better place, whether it be Ukrainian refugees, Afghanistan, Lebanon or from any other country, the efforts of the international refugee agency to provide a home and help refugees rebuild their lives are “remarkable”.
