Over 100 Bulgarian service members, predominantly from the 3rd Brigade Command based in Blagoevgrad, will be deployed to Kosovo as part of NATO’s ongoing mission to restore and maintain security in the region. The Bulgarian contingent will play a crucial role in the stabilization force, which has been instrumental in ensuring peace and stability in Kosovo since the end of the conflict in 1999.

The Bulgarian unit will be integrated into the 2nd Multinational Battalion of the Operational Reserve Forces, under the command of Major Krasimir Damyanov, with Captain Ferdo Ferdinandov serving as the Company Commander.

This deployment underscores Bulgaria’s ongoing commitment to supporting NATO’s peacekeeping missions and contributing to regional stability in the Balkans.

The Deputy Minister of Defense, Radostin Iliev, highlighted the significance of the deployment in a statement ahead of the ceremony. “Our participation in the NATO Stabilization Force in Kosovo is a testament to Bulgaria’s dedication to international peace and security.

The professionalism and preparedness of our troops are vital to the success of this mission, and we are proud to support our allies in maintaining stability in the region.”

Admiral Emil Eftimov, Chief of Defense, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of the mission for Bulgaria and the international community.

“The deployment of our forces to Kosovo is a crucial part of our contribution to NATO’s collective security efforts. It is a responsibility we take seriously, and I am confident in the capabilities of our service members to perform their duties with distinction.”

The ceremony in Georgi Izmirliev Square is expected to be attended by local officials, military personnel, and families of the deploying soldiers. The event will feature speeches by senior defense officials, a formal review of the troops, and a symbolic send-off for the unit.

The presence of high-ranking officials underscores the importance of the mission and the support from the highest levels of government and military leadership.

This deployment comes at a time when NATO continues to adapt to evolving security challenges in the Balkans and beyond.

The KFOR mission, established in 1999, aims to maintain a safe and secure environment in Kosovo, support the development of a stable, democratic, multi-ethnic, and peaceful Kosovo, and facilitate the establishment of a viable economy.
