A US official has defended the decision to supply Ukraine with the weapons, which are banned in more than 100 countries; Colin Kahl, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, defended President Biden’s decision to send controversial munitions to Ukraine.

He stated that cluster munitions might result in civilian casualties. Still, the Pentagon found it necessary to send Cluster bombs to Ukraine to prevent Russia from victory and gaining more control of Ukrainian ground.

As per reports, the Ukrainian counteroffensive has disastrously failed so far due to heavy loss of Western equipment and casualties from the Ukraine side.

NATO allies like Germany, France and Poland delivered sophisticated weapons to Ukraine like Leopard 2 tanks, Caesar howitzers, thousands of shells and other munitions. However, still, Ukraine failed to gain the expected results due to a lack of training and strategies.

To assist Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Putin’s Russia, the US has come up with another package of weapons aid worth 800 million dollars, including cluster bombs.

One unit of cluster bomb contains hundreds of small bomblets which can spread over a wide area while dropped from an aircraft. A single munition can destroy, to a large extent, and tough armour present on the battlefield.

Due to its devastating power, the usage of cluster bombs can also result in unnecessary collateral damage and civilian casualties. That’s why more than 100 countries ban the use of this munition in war.

Moscow has condemned the US decision to send controversial munitions to Ukraine and blamed Pentagon and President Joe Biden for escalating the war.

Russia also claimed that Pentagon’s decision to supply Cluster bombs to Ukraine shows weakness and desperation of Western allies as Ukraine failed to gain success on battlefield despite sending several high-tech weapons to Kyiv.

Moscow believes sending cluster bombs will not benefit Kyiv and will result in a disaster and loss of life and equipment from Ukrainian side.

Defending the US decision, Ukraine accused Russia of excessively using Cluster munitions in the battle of Kharkiv, intentionally causing civilian casualties.
