Sofia, Bulgaria: Simeon Stavrev, a member of the National Council of “Yes, Bulgaria“, blamed Sofia’s Police Department for not taking necessary action during the vandalism of the House of Europe in Sofia.
The incident took place yesterday, May 22, 2023, when the protest organized by the Pro-Russian party Vuzrazhdane and Bulgarian Socialist Party took displayed the Russian and Soviet Union’s flags outside the European Commission building and threw red paint over the building.
The Member of the National Council of Yes Bulgaria raised questions over the approach of Sofia’a Police for not taking necessary actions against the protestors. He stated that the so-called peaceful protestors were supporting the aggressor who caused numerous deaths in Ukraine and kidnapped 1600 kids from Ukraine.
The protest was organized against the Bulgarian support of Ukraine. The protestors highlighted that sending aid to Ukraine will push Bulgaria into conflict with Russia.
It was the sixth protest in the past weeks, but the first time, it resulted in an act of vandalism. The demonstrators underlined that Bulgaria had historical ties with Russia, and its continuous support to Ukraine with arms and ammunition can pull the country into war with Russia.
Under the rule of Former Bulgaria Prime Minister Kiril Petkov, Bulgaria secretly supplied numerous weapons, ammunition and fuel to Ukraine worth almost a billion.
In the past days, numerous protests were organized on the streets of Sofia and Varna to halt the weapons supply to Kyiv, but it was the first time a protest resulted in vandalism.
Ukraine has often requested heavy weapons and military equipment from Bulgaria because it has a significant amount of Soviet-era armaments, ideal supplies for the Ukrainian army to stand against the Russian offensive.
Bulgarian President Rumen Radev rejected the demands of Ukraine even after being pressured by EU, NATO and USA. He said that sending weapons to Kyiv will push the country into a direct conflict with Russia. Ceasefire and tals is the only way to end the conflict and maintain global peace, said President Radev on his decision of not sending weapons to Kyiv.
