Victory Day is celebrated across Europe to celebrate the victory over the Nazis in world war II. While addressing the country, the head of the state, President Radev, remarked that ignoring history lessons heralds tragedies, so everyone has to remember the horrors of World War II, which led to the extinction of tens of millions.

Additionally, he noted that Not war but dialogue and diplomacy are the paths to peace and prosperity in Europe, where every nation has a right to a place and a dignified future.

Speaking about the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War that marked 440 days since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, President Radev stated that despite the victory against the Nazis 78 years ago, war has once again broken out in Europe. It is essential to stop this conflict before it involves more countries.

Since the beginning of the war, the Bulgarian President has suggested EU countries to open talks with Russia and promote a ceasefire instead of sending weapons to Kyiv.

Despite being pressured by the National Assembly and the EU, President Radev denied Ukraine’s demands of sending heavy weapons to Kyiv to continue their conflict with Russia.

On Victory Day, his main message was to restore world peace once again and say no to another war in Europe which last time took the lives of millions in WW2.

He said, “Happy Victory Day over Nazism, Happy United Europe Day, a deep bow to the feat of the Bulgarian veterans of the Second World War, to our ancestors, who stood up against the Holocaust and humanitarian ideologies. Eternal memory to sacrifice for freedom”.
