In 2023 it marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the National Historical Museum and the construction of a museum complex in the city of Sofia.

For half a century, the largest museum institution in Bulgaria has been developing the cultural and scientific understanding of the preservation and preservation of the historical heritage left on the Bulgarian lands by the tribes and peoples that inhabited our lands from antiquity to the present day.

In 50 poster banners, the “50 out of 50” exhibition collects and presents some of the National History Museum’s most unique events, exhibitions and activities from its founding to the present, 2023.

The anniversary presentation also included more than 150 exhibits in showcases, part of the museum’s funds, purchased items and donations, as well as representative gifts for the National Historical Museum donated by Bulgarian and foreign guests and friends of the museum.

The largest museum institution in Bulgaria was founded by Order No. 90 of the Council of Ministers on May 5, 1973. , which marks the beginning of the construction of a museum complex in Sofia.

For the first director of the museum, in June 1974. , has been appointed Prof. Strashimir Dimitrov. Shortly after that, the appointments of the museum staff began. The very first exhibition of the museum – “Prehistoric Art in Bulgarian Lands” (May 5, 1975), is a request for the future exceeding the chronological boundaries set out in the Order for the Establishment of a National Historical Museum.

The public motives that caused the creation of the National Historical Museum are the collapse of the one created in 1893. The National Museum in the Museum Network of Bulgaria, which leads to the lack of an institution to cover its functions the search, preservation, documentation, conservation and restoration, study and exposing, studies and popularizes the movable cultural monuments of all possible manifestations of human creativity from all over the country, the Bulgarian ethnic territories abroad and the Bulgarian diaspora.

Back in 1979, by a government decision, two floors of the Sofia City Court were handed over to construct the National History Museum. Back in 1983, the cabinets, stock rooms, and technical rooms were ready, and in March 1984.

The exposure itself has also been discovered. After much discussion, the exposition of the National Historical Museum is built on the basis of a comparison of two museum principles – the chronological and the collectable. The museum has become a resource for the whole country.

In 2000 The National History Museum was moved to the Residence Boyana – House No. 1, located in a beautiful building at the foot of Vitosha. The new permanent exposition was opened solemnly on June 29, 2000.
