Given that Romania and Bulgaria share a border and have good relations, the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs congratulated Romania on National Neighbor and ally Day.

The Ministry wrote, ”Best wishes for health and prosperity to Romanian people. We will continue to work for the enhancement of our friendship and excellent cooperation”.

The relations between both countries are foreign relations; Bulgaria has an embassy in Bucharest, while Romania has its embassy in the capital Sofia.

According to Wikipedia, around 4,575 Romanians and 7,336 Bulgarians live in each country. The Danube forms the majority of the 608 km of shared borders between the nations. Both nations are full members of NATO and the European Union.

Despite the friendly relations, there have still been disputes because of Bulgaria’s accommodating attitude toward Russia. The length of Romania’s shared border with Russia is 613.8 kilometres. Following Russia’s strike on Ukraine on February 24, Romania is afraid of a potential attack.

For a very long time, the bordering nations that are bigger and more powerful have significantly impacted Romania and Bulgaria. Bulgaria was formerly ruled by the Ottoman Empire. In contrast, Romania, located in the southeast corner of Europe in the Balkan region, was formerly a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Both nations were taken in by the Soviet Union as satellite states during the Cold War. Romania and Bulgaria took a pro-Western stance following the fall of the Soviet Union, joining the European Union and NATO in 2007.

However, both nations are again tangled in crises and conflicts between these powerful nations, particularly the refugee issue involving Europe and Turkey and the Ukrainian conflict involving Russia and Europe. In these evolving circumstances, Romania and Bulgaria will try to assert their interests, but as in the past, they will respond to the results rather than influencing them.
