Japan and Bulgaria established diplomatic ties in 1939, and corresponding diplomatic missions were founded in Sofia in 1939 and Tokyo in 1942. Due to the effects of the Second World War, the contacts had previously been severed; however, they were mended when official documents were exchanged in September 1959, reestablishing diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Their conversation is mainly focused on improving their trade and diplomatic relations. According to the United Nations COMTRADE statistics on international commerce, Bulgaria exported to Japan for US$64.19 million in 2021, and its imports totalled about US$128.51 million.

Both countries’ public and business sectors have increased their participation in cultural exchanges.

Besides inviting students, media people, teachers, diplomats, and others to Japan, Japan has been organizing “Days of Japanese Culture” in Bulgaria every year since 1990, which include various events, such as concerts, exhibitions, and demonstrations of Japanese art, to promote cultural understanding between Bulgarian and Japanese peoples.

Bulgaria also organized “Bulgarian Cultural Weeks” in Tokyo in 1994 and 1997. The Children’s Choir of the Bulgarian National Radio and the Sofia National Opera have often been giving concerts in Japan.
