Sofia Airport announced on Wednesday that it has restored vehicle access to Terminal 2, bringing relief to passengers and transport operators after a temporary closure earlier this month.
The popular Kiss&Ride zone, located in front of the terminal, has resumed normal operations, the airport confirmed in a post on social media.
Vehicle access to Terminal 2 had been suspended since August 4 due to necessary maintenance works, prompting adjustments in traffic flow and access to airport facilities.
The decision to reopen comes as passengers increasingly rely on the terminal, which serves as a major gateway for international and domestic flights.
Airport officials emphasized that the reopening of the Kiss&Ride area will significantly ease passenger drop-off and pick-up, a service widely used by travelers and their families.
“The Kiss&Ride zone is once again available at its usual place, ensuring convenience for all visitors,” the airport statement said.
Despite the reopening, temporary changes will remain in place due to ongoing construction work on the expansion joints of the bridge leading to Terminal 2.
Between August 24 and September 4, shuttle services operating between Terminals 1 and 2, as well as public transport buses, will relocate their stops to the Kiss&Ride zone.
This temporary adjustment is designed to ensure passenger safety while maintenance crews carry out essential upgrades to the bridge infrastructure.
The shuttle buses, which play a key role in connecting the two terminals, are expected to continue operating without disruption, albeit from the new temporary location.
Parking P8, typically used by tourist buses, will also be closed for the duration of the maintenance period. To accommodate these vehicles, Sofia Airport has announced that tourist buses will be allowed to use the Kiss&Ride area free of charge for up to 30 minutes.
This measure is aimed at reducing inconvenience for tour operators and large groups traveling through the airport during the works.
Travel experts note that the timing of these changes coincides with the peak summer travel season, a period that has already placed additional strain on European airports.
Sofia Airport has urged passengers to stay informed about the temporary arrangements and to allow extra time for transfers between terminals.
The works on the expansion joints are part of the airport’s broader infrastructure maintenance and improvement plan, which seeks to enhance safety and efficiency for travelers.
Officials expressed confidence that once the upgrades are completed, access to Terminal 2 will be smoother and more reliable. Sofia Airport continues to expand its role as a key transport hub in the Balkans, handling millions of passengers annually.
With traffic steadily increasing, the airport’s management has pledged to balance necessary infrastructure work with efforts to minimize disruption for passengers and operators.
For now, with vehicle access to Terminal 2 restored, passengers can expect smoother travel experiences, albeit with some temporary adjustments in shuttle services and tourist bus parking until September 4.
