Sofia Airport Expansion Underway: 1000 New Parking Spaces Announced

Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Anna Natova has unveiled plans to construct a sprawling outdoor parking lot at Sofia Airport’s Terminal 2. The goal is to enhance passenger experience and modernize infrastructure. 

This development, which promises an additional 1000 parking spaces, marks a significant step forward in the airport’s ambitious renovation agenda.

Speaking at the launch of construction activities, Deputy Minister Natova underscored the pivotal role these enhancements would play in bolstering Sofia Airport’s appeal as a key European transportation hub. 

“The total parking capacity will rise to 1,800 spaces with the completion of all parking lots, ensuring improved service for passengers and guests at Sofia Airport,” declared Natova, emphasizing the tangible benefits this expansion would deliver to travelers.

These initiatives form part of the inaugural five-year investment plan, a mandate entrusted to the airport’s concessionaire with a deadline set for the end of 2025. 

The commitment to this endeavor stands at an impressive BGN 143 million, indicative of the serious intent to transform Sofia Airport into a modern, competitive, and preferred destination for travelers across the continent.

Providing insights into the progress made thus far, Natova disclosed, “By the close of last year, the concessionaire had invested BGN 54 million, with an additional BGN 49 million earmarked for this year.” 

This financial injection underscores the concerted efforts to realize the outlined vision for Sofia Airport’s evolution. Expectations are high for the airport operator to maintain momentum in executing the investment program. 

The inauguration of the outdoor parking lot serves as a tangible demonstration of progress, and Sofia Airport stands poised to undergo a remarkable transformation in the coming years.

The launch event witnessed the convergence of key stakeholders, including SOF Connect CEO Jesus Caballero, Slatina district mayor Georgi Iliev, representatives from Sofia Municipality, and the contracted construction company. 

Their collective presence underscores the collaborative spirit driving this ambitious endeavor, highlighting the shared commitment to realizing Sofia Airport’s full potential.

As construction commences on the outdoor parking lot, anticipation mounts for subsequent phases of renovation, including the long-awaited overhaul of the indoor parking facility.
