In a groundbreaking revelation that has left the scientific community awe-inspired, the Black Sea has unveiled its hidden treasures – bubbling reefs.

The discovery comes as part of the “NATURA 2000 in the Black Sea” project, a collaborative effort led by the Pontus Indago Consortium, funded by the Operational Programme Environment and supported by the European Regional Development Fund 2014-2020.

Under the visionary leadership of Consortium leader Boris Karakushev, scientists identified these enigmatic formations in key areas, including Zelenka, Aladzha Banka, and Ropotamo Beach.

The revelation marks a historic milestone in marine research, shedding light on a phenomenon long suspected but lacking tangible evidence until now.

The primary objective of the project extends beyond the mere revelation of these bubbling reefs. It centers on mapping the diverse habitats within Bulgaria’s sea territory, evaluating the efficacy of the NATURA 2000 network, and aligning designated zones with the actual distribution of species.

The initiative is poised to redefine our understanding of the Black Sea’s marine ecosystems.

Karakushev, in an exclusive statement, expressed the significance of the discovery, stating, “The existence of bubbling reefs has been a subject of speculation for years, and finally, we have concrete evidence. This not only expands our knowledge but also underscores the importance of preserving these unique habitats.”

The project’s comprehensive approach includes the evaluation of species distribution, identification of species crucial for conservation efforts, and the pinpointing of areas requiring habitat maintenance and restoration.

Deputy Environment and Water Minister Petar Dimitrov underscored the project’s alignment with environmental policies and its direct relevance to fulfilling Bulgaria’s commitments under the EU Habitats Directive, embedded within the Biological Diversity Act.

“The discovery of bubbling reefs not only contributes to our understanding of the Black Sea but also enhances our ability to implement effective conservation measures. It aligns perfectly with our environmental policies and reinforces Bulgaria’s commitment to biodiversity conservation,” stated Deputy Minister Dimitrov.

The significance of this discovery extends beyond scientific curiosity. Supported by the European Regional Development Fund 2014-2020, the project exemplifies the collaborative efforts required to unravel the mysteries of the deep.

As humanity faces the pressing challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss, understanding and preserving unique ecosystems like the Black Sea’s bubbling reefs becomes paramount.

This revelation serves as a testament to the importance of sustained scientific inquiry and international collaboration in addressing the urgent environmental issues of our time.
