Sofia, Bulgaria: Yordanka Fandakova, Mayor of the capital, Sofia, informed that on August 1, 2023, the Sofia Municipality started constructing a primary school and kindergarten in the district. “Monastery Meadows – West”.
She described that the school, with 21 classrooms and a kindergarten for four groups, should open on September 15, 2025. It will have a gym, children’s and sports playgrounds, a parking lot and an assembly hall, which, at the will of the donors, will be named “Homeland Stryaha”.
The land was donated by the Fund “13 Century Bulgaria” with a decision of the Council of Ministers in 2020. Mayor Fandakova commented that Cleaning up the old building was extraordinarily laborious and took about a year and a half.
preparatory work was led by the Mayor of the Vitosha District, Teodor Petkov, in cooperation with the Initiative Committee of the Monastery Meadows-West. She thanked them for their cooperation.
The Mayor of Sofia mentioned that in the Vitosha region, the Municipality is building three more kindergartens and renovating two elementary schools. A total of 21 are the new kindergarten buildings that Sofia Municipality are currently building in different areas of the Municipality. Ten of them will be completed by the end of the year.
Mayor Fandakova said that she expects district mayors to do their job, as the construction of kindergartens is an activity that has been decentralized for years. She emphasizes that the Municipality provided funding directly to district mayors, who choose the builders and, as contractors, control the construction.
She explains that for over 15 years, the Municipality has not stopped the construction of kindergartens precisely because Sofia continues to be an attractive centre for young people who come to work and create families.
Mayor Fandakova said, “For this time, we have built 130 kindergarten buildings and 24 new school buildings”.
