Sofia, Bulgaria: New data has been revealed by the Interior Ministry on June 1, 2022, according to which, from January 2022 to May 2022, a total of 175 Bulgarians lost their lives in road accidents.

This death toll is 24 times more than the data from January to May 2021, as well as the initial five months of the 2020 year, where the death toll was 140.

Meanwhile, the death rate due to road accidents in the initial five months of 2018 and 2019 were 180 and 188, respectively, the official data further reveals.

Nearly 2228 accidents have been reported in the first five months of 2022. On the other hand, a total of 2755 Bulgarians sustained serious injuries during the same time period in road accidents.

The data adds that only in the previous month, 585 road accidents took place in the European country – a clear sign of increasing road casualties.

Till 2021, Bulgaria had the second-highest road fatality rate in the European Union. This data was published by the European Commission on March 28.

The United States of America is having the highest number of road accidents at the global level. In the year 2018, the US recorded nearly 2.21 million road accidents which led to the demise of 37,461 individuals, whereas more than 3 million people sustained injuries.

Lithuania was the country in the European region with the highest road accident numbers.
