Significance of Waitangi Day:

The National day of New Zealand, also known as Waitangi Day, honours the anniversary of the initial signing – on February 6 1840 – of the Treaty of Waitangi. This treaty is regarded as the – “founding document” of the southwestern Pacific Ocean country.

The day was not being celebrated until the year 1934 but was announced as a national public holiday in the year 1974.

To commemorate the signing of the treaty, ceremonies take place at Waitangi and elsewhere. A variety of events are directed, including parties, Māori hui (the social gatherings), reflections on the New Zealand history, official awards & citizenship ceremonies. The commemoration has also been focus of the protest by Māori activists & is occasionally the focus of controversy.

Signing this treaty assisted the effect of gaining the British sovereignty over the islands of New Zealand, which was officially announced on May 21, 1840. The celebrations of the day begin two days prior to the eve.

It was in the year 1974 when the day was being announced as a national day of the country. The day is also celebrated as the Waitangi Day Ball in London, United Kingdom, whereas a Waitangi Day Festival has been commemorated in Australia since the year 2002.
