Elizabeth II ( Elizabeth Alexandra Mary) was the Queen of the United Kingdom from February 6 1952, until September 8 2022. She died peacefully at her Scottish estate, Balmoral, where she spent most of her time at age 96. Her legendary reign of 70 years and 214 days has been the longest-serving Monarch in the British Empire and the second longest recorded Monarch in the world. Elizabeth was also Queen of 14 commonwealth realms, including the United Kingdom.

She was born on April 21, 1926, at Mayfair, London, as the firstborn of Duke and Dutches of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth I). The Monarch became the Queen of seven independent Commonwealth countries at age 25 after her father died in February 1952. Elizabeth received a private home education and started working in the public sector during the Second World War. In November 1947, She married the former prince of Greece and Denmark, Philip Mountbatten; their marriage lasted 73 years, ending with his passing in April 2021.

Her son King Charles III said the demise of his beloved mother was a “moment of great sadness” for him and his family. Her loss would be “deeply felt” across the globe.

He added, ” We proudly mourn the loss of a loving mother and sovereign. I am aware that her loss would be deeply felt in the entire nation, the realms of the commonwealth and countless people across the globe“.

After the Queen’s doctors expressed concern about her health earlier in the day, senior royals had assembled in Balmoral. Following the Queen’s placement under medical supervision, all her children made their way to Balmoral, which is close to Aberdeen. Prince William, her grandson and current successor to the throne, and Prince Harry, gathered there. They will return to Buckingum palace and are expected to address the nation on Friday.

Prime minister Liz Truss, appointed by the Queen on Tuesday, said, ” monarch, who had “given us the security and power that we needed, was the cornerstone of modern Britain’s formation”.

She said about the new king, ” We pledge our loyalty and devotion to him, just as his mother gave so much, so long, to so many people. My prayers are with the King and Royal family”.

15 prime ministers served during her time in office, including recently appointed Liz Truss, who was born 101 years after Winston Churchill in 1874.

The union flag on the top of the Buckingum palace was lowered to half after the confirmation of her death at Balmore castle in Scotland.

Prince William and his wife, Catherine, were made the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Cornwall upon the passing of the Queen. Members of Parliament will honour the Queen and swear allegiance to King Charles.
