Dominica: The Minister of Housing, Melissa Skerrit distributes school supplies to children considering the launch of the new academic term in the region. This initiative is a part of her back-to-school program which took place in Peebles Park on 31st August.

Under this launched program, the Minister of Housing provided 276 backpacks filled with essential supplies for their new academic session. The event also featured several activities to mark a joyful beginning of the term.

Minister Melissa stated this initiative as her effort to do her best for the coming generations, “As we are coming to the end of summer vacation, I tried my best to help where I could for our future generations’ upcoming academic term.”

Under her own foundation, this mission was set to celebrate children’s back-to-school journey and it emerged to be a great success as children at the event enjoyed the celebration while talking to the minister.

She further addressed her pride over the children as she noted, “I am so much proud of our nation’s desperate young minds and will continue to do part in helping them toward their journey to greatness.”

The activities were added to the event to help children interact better and create a comfortable environment for them. Refreshments were also available to delight the students and create a unique experience for them.

Minister Melissa also extended a big thanks to her team for the huge success of the mission, “Thank you to all my team, and the supporters who helped to make this Back-to-School Program conducted each year.”

She further emphasized the availability of yearly scholarships, school transfer grants, bursaries, free transportation, and more for the betterment of youth.

In addition to this more assistance for teachers and administrators, and the extension of the curriculum to include technical and vocational topics will also aim towards the betterment of the coming generation.

Notably, the initiative is being led every year by the Melissa Skerrit Foundation, a well-known charity operating in Dominica under Minister Melissa Skerrit.

The back-to-school program was launched to motivate students for the new term and help them achieve their educational goals more efficiently.

The foundation which was led in the year 2016 is being actively involved in such programs and initiatives. The foundation has till now operated a mother and baby program, an elderly assistance program, hurricane relief programs, and the most recent Women’s Symposium.
