Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: During an interview on May 11, 2023, at the Koi Resort, St Kitts and Nevis, Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, addressed various national concerns.
He emphasized the importance of the housing initiative and described it as a groundbreaking move that would provide numerous benefits to the residents of the twin-island federation.
As per the information provided by PM Drew on his official Facebook account, during a discussion about the “housing revolution,” he explained his position and mentioned that the housing projects are anticipated to provide numerous employment opportunities for local labourers, with 90% of the workforce being chosen from St Kitts and Nevis.
Prime Minister Terrance Drew emphasized that the Government of St Kitts and Nevis will prioritize local workers’ and contractors’ employment and working opportunities for the housing projects.
He further mentioned that the workers, including roofers, painters, carpenters, masons, steel benders, and heavy equipment operators, will be provided with all the necessary facilities to ensure their work is supported.
Geoffrey Hanley, the Deputy Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, who thoroughly monitors Housing and Human Settlements, spoke to the public about housing projects and explained that the National Housing Corporation (NHC) and the Government have partnered with East Coast Housing Development, a developer from Trinidad and Tobago.
During the roundtable meeting, Prime Minister Drew expressed the importance of providing affordable, high-quality housing for the people of the Caribbean nation.
As part of the plan, a contract was established to finance 2,400 smart houses in the period of four years, with 600 being delivered each year at affordable prices.
PM Drew also stressed the importance of providing benefits and employment opportunities to the local workers through the housing project. He explained that the primary objective of the government of St Kitts and Nevis is to address the need for affordable homes among the people.
The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis noted that people could benefit from initiatives that allow them to build wealth and have a stake in the nation. Additionally, the National Housing Corporation (NHC) will soon organize a housing fair and launch a website so everyone can quickly get all the necessary information about the development project.
During his interview, PM Drew underlined that each house will consist of a refrigerator, stove, and solar water heater.
