Roseau, Dominica: Irving McIntyre, Finance Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, recently discussed the importance of the Spouse and Parents bill under the Maintenance Act 2023 in Roseau, the country’s capital, during the most recent session of parliament. He claimed that the legislation is progressive and adaptable, with unique advantages for spouses and senior elderly.
Minister Irving McIntyre also stated that the government had reduced the age for defensive benefits to 65 years old and improved the number of bills in the SDK programme that targets parents and grandparents. He said that housing measures had also been made to safeguard the defenceless.
In his remarks, he also mentioned that the government has been drafting legislation and moving toward a comprehensive strategy for the benefit of the unfortunate and vulnerable, especially older people.
Minister Mclyntyre claimed that the five bills the Aegis Chambers have result from tremendous effort because the Chambers of the 1980s have acknowledged them as the exclusive and fundamental draught.
In addition, it was claimed that except during the 1980s, when Chambers was completed by the legal division of the OECS commission, this one was conducted exclusively by the Aegis Chambers, and policies fell under the influence of all these sectors.
He stated that while Dominica’s government is doing everything it can, society must also play a crucial part in the process.
In addition, Minister of Finance McIntyre noted that society has a role to play in addressing such vulnerable circumstances in the communities despite all of the government’s efforts. Setting a good example and expressing gratitude to one’s parents and grandparents are important.
Meanwhile, he brought up the bill’s clause, noting that clauses three and four made it abundantly clear that no respondent or dependent was under attack by the legislation.
In his concluding remarks, he stated that the court’s ruling had taken all the previously listed factors into significant consideration and that it was not enough to assert that they could not satisfy all of the demands.
In addition, Minister McIntyre clarified that Clause 4 of the proposals states that a person will not be held responsible if they remarry or are forced to live with someone else. The legislation protects both the dependent and the respondent. He described them as “forward-thinking bills.
