Bulgarian Prime Minister meets Albanian President; discusses important matters including Ukraine

Sofia, Bulgaria: Prime Minister of Bulgaria – Kiril Petkov, yesterday, on April 5, 2022, welcomed the President of the Republic of Albania – Ilir Rexhep Meta, in Bulgaria. During their meeting, both the dignitaries held significant talks on several matters of interest for the two, such as – regional economic cooperation, tourism promotion and investment. 

As per the statement of Prime Minister Petkov, the main objective is the European future of the Western Balkans, to which the country is determined to work effectively.

Tweet of PM Petkov states, “I am pleased to welcome in Sofia the President of Albania @ilirmetazyrtar, with whom we discussed regional economic cooperation, tourism promotion and investment. Our common goal is the European future of the Western Balkans, and Bulgaria is determined to work in this direction.”  

Albania’s President also met with his Bulgarian counterpart – Rumen Radev, where both the nations affirmed their support for Ukraine amid the Russian military invasion. 

President Meta tweeted, “Together with @PresidentOfBg Rumen Radev, we confirmed today that Albania and Bulgaria are in full support of the sovereignty & territorial integrity of #Ukraine & condemn the unprovoked and unjustified aggression of Russia. #StandWithUkraine.” 

“I condemn the barbaric crimes which are known to all & for which an international investigation is required & we are for an immediate cessation of this aggression, but also for the resolution of all issues, through dialogue & agreement. @PresidentOfBg #StandWithUkraine.” 

“At the same time, as two – @NATO member nations, we are more committed than ever to demonstrate our commitment to democracy & to the strongest European & Euro-Atlantic perspective of our continent. @PresidentOfBg #StandWithUkraine,” the Albanian President further tweeted.  

Diplomatic between Bulgaria and Albania was established in 1922. The embassy of Albania is established in the capital city of Bulgaria – Sofia; meanwhile, the Bulgarian Embassy is in Tirana.

Bulgaria has always supported Albania’s bid for membership in the European Union. Bulgaria, Albania and North Macedonia as nations formed the core of the Balkans.
