Sofia Municipality, led by Mayor Vasil Terziev, has announced that this year’s New Year festivities will feature a light show instead of traditional fireworks.
The initiative, designed to protect children, pets, and individuals with disabilities from the distress caused by loud explosions, will be showcased during the New Year’s concert at Knyaz Alexander I Square.
The municipality’s decision reflects a growing trend in cities worldwide to move away from noisy pyrotechnics in favor of more sustainable and community-friendly alternatives.
The light display promises a dazzling visual spectacle that caters to a broader audience, creating a joyous and welcoming environment for all attendees.
Restrictions on Pyrotechnics
Sofia residents have been urged to refrain from using fireworks to complement the municipality’s efforts to reduce noise pollution during the celebrations.
Municipal authorities have also reiterated the prohibition of outdoor fireworks classified as categories F2 and F3, which include more powerful pyrotechnic devices such as rockets and Roman candles.
Under the current regulations, the use of these fireworks is only permitted within a specific window: from 6:00 PM on December 31 until 2:00 AM on January 1.
Violators risk fines ranging from 100 to 300 leva, while property penalties for more serious infractions could reach 500 leva.
Category F1 fireworks, which are deemed less hazardous and include sparklers and small “crackling” balls, remain permissible throughout the year.
However, Sofia Municipality has emphasized the importance of responsible usage to ensure a safe and enjoyable New Year’s Eve for everyone.
Enforcement Measures in Place
To uphold these regulations, 10 patrol teams have been deployed across Sofia to monitor compliance. The teams consist of Sofia Police personnel and regional officers, who have been actively conducting inspections since December 5.
Their primary focus has been to prevent the illegal sale and distribution of fireworks and other pyrotechnic products in the city.
The patrol teams are expected to intensify their efforts as New Year’s Eve approaches, ensuring that individuals and businesses adhere to the established guidelines.
Sofia Municipality has expressed its commitment to maintaining order and safeguarding public safety during the celebrations.
A Step Towards Inclusivity
Mayor Terziev emphasized that the municipality’s decision to replace fireworks with a light show underscores Sofia’s dedication to inclusivity and environmental awareness.
“We aim to create a celebration that everyone can enjoy, without causing unnecessary stress or harm to vulnerable members of our community,” he said in a statement.
The initiative has received positive feedback from advocacy groups and residents alike, many of whom have lauded the municipality for prioritizing the well-being of its citizens.
Animal welfare organizations have particularly welcomed the move, citing the adverse effects of loud fireworks on pets and wildlife.
Looking Ahead
As Sofia prepares to ring in 2025, the municipality’s emphasis on innovation and inclusivity sets a hopeful tone for the New Year.
With its captivating light show and strict enforcement of fireworks regulations, the city aims to set a benchmark for future celebrations, balancing tradition with modern, considerate practices.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to join the festivities at Knyaz Alexander I Square and witness the light show that promises to illuminate the night sky in a safe and harmonious manner.
