SOFIA—Public transport in Sofia will operate on modified schedules during the festive period, with specific arrangements for Christmas and New Year, the Sofia Public Transport Company announced.
The changes aim to accommodate holiday travelers while ensuring the city’s transport system operates smoothly.
On December 24, trams, trolleybuses, and buses will run according to pre-holiday and holiday schedules, with services ending between 11:30 p.m. and 11:45 p.m.
No nighttime public transport will be available on Christmas Eve. However, special nighttime services are scheduled for New Year’s celebrations, ensuring seamless travel for revelers.
New Year’s Night Services
On the night of December 31 to January 1, Sofia’s metro lines will operate every 20 minutes throughout the night. Additionally, tram lines 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 20, and 22, along with trolleybus lines 2, 5, 7, and 9, will provide continuous service.
Select bus and trolleybus routes will also operate during this period, making it easier for residents and visitors to celebrate without transportation concerns.
Adjustments to Holiday Schedules
Changes to public transport schedules will also apply on other key dates. On December 23, 27, 30, and 31, as well as January 2 and 3, most public transport lines will follow holiday schedules. Exceptions include metro lines 1, 2, 3, and 4, which will maintain weekday schedules.
Temporary suspensions have been announced for specific routes, including bus lines U1, U2, 7, 58, 68, 75, and 294. Travelers are advised to check the Sofia Public Transport Company’s website or mobile app for detailed updates on affected routes and schedules.
Ticket Sales and Passenger Inspections
Ticket and season ticket sales offices will operate with extended hours to accommodate the increased demand during the holidays.
Locations include key metro stations such as Obelya, Slivnitsa, and Serdika, as well as other central points like 1 Vazrazhdane Square and Banski Square near the Central Halls.
Despite the festive season, the company emphasized that inspections for irregular passengers will continue as usual. Authorities urged passengers to ensure they have valid tickets or season cards to avoid fines.
Traffic Arrangements for Christmas Celebrations
Special traffic management measures will be implemented around St. Alexander Nevsky Church-Monument to facilitate the traditional Christmas service.
From 4:00 p.m. on December 24 until the conclusion of events on December 25, parking in designated areas of the square will be prohibited.
Starting at 7:00 a.m. on Christmas Day, vehicle access to streets surrounding the church, including Oborishte, 15th November, and 11th August Streets, will be restricted.
The Traffic Police Department will manage these areas to ensure smooth traffic flow during the celebrations.
Plan Ahead for a Stress-Free Holiday
The Sofia Public Transport Company urged residents and visitors to plan their journeys in advance and consider the modified schedules and restricted areas. With these measures, the city aims to balance festive cheer with efficient and safe transport and traffic management.
