Dominica: The Prime Minster of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit has highlighted the future plans of the Dominican government in his recent press conference aiming at enhancing the economic growth and development across various sectors.
The initiatives disclosed are the part of the country’s latest budget which will be addressed by the Minister of Finance, Irving Mclntyre on July 26, 2024.
Among the major projects discussed are the development of an international airport, the expansion of the marina, enhancement of the rose cultivation, and advancements in the agricultural and fisheries department.
Additionally, the budget contained plans for boosting the digital economy, the Robert Grande Bay project and the establishment of the geothermal plant. According to the PM, these projects are supposed to foster economic growth and help Dominica to move higher in the aim of becoming a dynamic nation.
“All in an effort to help drive economic growth in a number of sectors, taking us closer to the dynamic Dominica we are all envisioning.” PM emphasized.
The prime minister further put an emphasis on the healthcare sector, stating that the minister of finance is working on outlining a new structure to the nursing service in Dominica. Reportedly, the plan is to create several new positions, which will help nurses further advance their skillset.
“The Minister of Finance will also be expected to outline a new structure for the nursing service in Dominica, with the creation of several new positions, which will allow for the upward mobility of our nurses, and to recognize the special, specialized and specialist training.” Prime minister said.
During the press conference, PM Skerrit also expressed his full support for the BERYL affected countries and called on for climate resiliency. “We pledge our support to the affected countries and keep sounding the call for urgent and comprehensive climate financing reform.”
The government has announced that it will continue to increase its efforts to improve climate resilience since climate change continues to have a severe impact on small island developing states.
He pointed out: “The time for climate action is now and the government will intensify its efforts to build resilience and rally more decisive and impactful action from the developed countries who should bear the bulk of the responsibility for climate crisis.”
PM Skerrit also stated that he will continue fighting for the issue in the coming time to ensure safety.
“I urge our citizens to remain vigilant as we go through this hurricane season together, let us continue to prepare and keep ourselves informed as the season progress as I always stress, we must all play an active role in protecting our families, property and communities against the threat of severe weather,” The prime minister addressed
The prime minster also stated that he is all set to visit the St Vincent and the Grenadines with his fellow prime ministers on Tuesday to meet Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves and experience firsthand the damage caused by Hurricane Beryl in the island.
