
Burgas, Bulgaria – President and Commander-in-Chief Rumen Radev emphasized the urgent need for accelerated modernization and increased funding for the Bulgarian Navy during his visit aboard the frigate “Daring “at the national naval exercise Breeze-2024.
Addressing journalists, President Radev praised the Navy’s personnel for their exceptional ability to handle diverse situations but underscored the necessity for more modern equipment and improved conditions.
The head of state highlighted the growing geopolitical, economic, and energy significance of the Black Sea region, asserting that Bulgaria must safeguard its national interests and uphold its maritime state status.
“Bulgaria must have a reliable and modern Navy, as well as a system of interaction with all governmental and non-governmental organizations and local authorities,” stated Radev.

The exercise also involves NATO’s Joint Maritime Command (MARCOM), the Black Sea Anti-MCM (MCM Black Sea), the NATO Center for Anti-Mining Operations (NMW COE), the Headquarters for the Integration of NATO Forces in Bulgaria (NFIU), and the NATO Training Center for Marine Detergent Operations (NMIOTC).
In the waters of Burgas Bay, the servicemen showcased their skills in various scenarios, including controlling a fire on a merchant ship in port, managing the aftermath of an onboard incident, countering asymmetric attacks at sea and in the air, and shooting at aerial targets.
The exercise provided an opportunity for high-ranking guests, including President Radev and his wife, Desislava Radeva, to witness the Navy’s capabilities firsthand.
