In an exclusive interview with “Digi 24” TV, Minister of Defense Angel Tilvar revealed that Romania’s acquisition of the minesweeper is a strategic response to the growing concerns arising from the situation in Ukraine.

He emphasized the need for a robust defence mechanism, pointing out the discovery of mines in the Black Sea and the remnants of drones on Romanian territory following Russian attacks on port infrastructure in Ukraine.

“Romania has been trying for a long time to present the Black Sea region as a region of interest for the alliance, the eastern flank, and the EU,” Minister Tilvar stated.

He highlighted the international recognition of the Black Sea’s importance, especially in light of Russia’s actions in Ukraine, which were deemed a violation of international law.

Romania has procured two minesweepers from Britain to address the Black Sea defence’s equipment shortage.

Minister Tilvar asserted that Romania would be the sole possessor of similar ships among the countries involved in the initiative to demine the Black Sea, including Bulgaria and Turkey.

The minister acknowledged the persistent threats in the region and hinted at ongoing discussions about the possibility of Bucharest acquiring submarines.

While the talks remained in the informal stage, Minister Tilvar refrained from providing a specific deadline but affirmed that the matter was under consideration.

The decision to strengthen Romania’s naval capabilities aligns with the broader NATO summit’s affirmation in Vilnius, underscoring the Black Sea’s strategic significance in relation to Russia’s actions.

The move reflects Romania’s commitment to regional security and its proactive stance against potential threats.

As tensions continue to escalate in the Black Sea region, Romania’s acquisition of advanced maritime assets not only underscores its commitment to security but also sends a clear message about the collective efforts to safeguard the Black Sea from potential hazards.
