Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, and Konris Maynard, the Minister of Energy, both attended the Atlantic Council Partnership to Address the Climate Crisis 2030 (PACC 2030) Climate Resilience Clean Energy Summit in Nassau, The Bahamas, on June 9, 2023.
The meeting took place jointly with the US-Caribbean Leaders Meeting, which Kamala Harris, the vice president of the United States of America, organized.
During his remarks at PACC 2030, PM Terrance Drew discussed the Sustainable Island State Agenda of St Kitts and Nevis.
Prime Minister Drew said, “We recently told the United Nations that we promise to reduce the gases that are causing climate change. We also devised plans to advance our nation while preserving the environment”.
He added, “This is what our government said when we discussed turning St Kitts and Nevis into a sustainable island a few months ago. We want to build a strong and just nation and have a strategy that will last for seven years. This strategy will include a significant amount of energy.”
Additionally, Minister Drew shared the revolutionary objectives of the St Kitts and Nevis government with the whole world. According to PM Drew, the government’s main priority is the advancement of renewable energy sources in order to achieve energy security.
Despite the fact that we are a small nation, we have an excellent chance to invest in expanding our energy sector. We can generate a sizable amount of income with the resources we have, particularly geothermal energy. We may only want roughly 100 megawatts for our own needs, but we still have 900 megawatts available, said PM Drew during the event.
He added, “What are we supposed to do with all that extra energy? You can transmit it to nearby islands like Puerto Rico or convert it into hydrogen or ammonia. What’s left over may supply electricity to virtually the entire nation. He said, “It’s a big opportunity for us!” as he described his vision.
