Roseau, Dominica: West Indies Test Cricket will be played in Dominica in July 2023 as the country continues to make significant investments in sports to gain recognition as a host nation for various sporting disciplines on a global scale. During his Friday press conference, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit revealed his decision.

On July 20, 2022, two 20-20 international matches were held at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium, which marked the return of international cricket.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said the bid was presented to the West Indies cricket board when they requested to host the test match. He claimed that a bid to host a test match in July was put up, and the country is contributing USD 250,000 to stage the test match in Dominica.

PM Roosevelt Skerrit highlighted the advantages of it, including the fact that hotels and restaurants will gain profit. The cab drivers will gain financial gain. In an effort to promote economic activity in the nation, the bus drivers will transport the vendors who will set up shop along the park.

The Dominican government is making an effort to guarantee that facilities meet international standards because it wants to profit from sports tourism. With improvements in facilities and athletes, he claimed, they had ensured that the government will continue to prioritise the growth of sports.

During his conference, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit also discussed the government’s efforts for human development in Vielle Case Constituency.

The issue of NCDs diseases, he added, is a big concern, and as prime minister, he continues to fight for greater focus on residents’ health and welfare.

A number of programmes will be launched in the upcoming weeks and months, and he also discussed some of the initiatives he hopes to include the residents in.

PM Skerrit stated that he would like to work with the Village Council and that everyone in the neighbourhood plans to participate. He said, ‘’So we’ll be exercising and participating in health and wellness programmes”.

He emphasises that the Dominican government will bring nutritionists and medical specialists to the community to speak to the entire village about nutrition and the finest dietary combinations we need to take to manage and prevent ourselves from having sick.

“We’ll go to the playing field and stroll about there as well as the streets of the constituency to get some exercise. Will visit the beach, soak in the water, and perform that sort of exercise”, said PM Skerrit during the press conference.

One of the programmes he wants to introduce in his constituency is the backyard garden. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a practical approach as it promotes eating what one grows.

According to PM Skerrit, they can grow the majority of what they have because their soil is the most fertile and best in the nation. They must urge themselves to raise a lot of wheat because they have the thickest topsoil and the richest soil in this village, where it is possible to develop everything.
