Bulgaria has officially launched its annual “Winter” road safety campaign on November 1, focusing on preparing both drivers and vehicles for the challenges of the winter season.

The initiative, organized by the Ministry of Interior and the Traffic Police, is designed to reduce accidents and improve awareness through a series of targeted activities throughout November.

The campaign will run in three phases, each dedicated to a specific aspect of road safety. The first stage, from November 1 to 10, titled “With a Safe Road Vehicle in Winter,” focuses on drivers of two-wheeled vehicles,  , and animal-drawn transport. Authorities will inspect lights, reflective elements, and roadworthiness to ensure safety compliance.

The second stage, “Pedestrians, Passengers and Drivers for Tolerance on the Road,” will take place from November 11 to 20. Police will monitor pedestrian and driver behavior, emphasizing mutual respect and adherence to traffic rules.

Pedestrians will be reminded to avoid distractions, such as mobile phone use while crossing, while drivers are expected to yield appropriately at crossings. The final stage, “Safe Driving in Winter,” will be conducted from November 21 to 30.

This phase will concentrate on vehicle maintenance, particularly the condition of tires, brakes, and lighting systems. Officials will ensure that cars are properly equipped to handle slippery or icy roads.

Throughout the campaign, Traffic Police officers will perform targeted checks on national, regional, and municipal roads, including tests for alcohol and drug use. Educational sessions will also be organized in schools and kindergartens to instill safety habits among younger citizens.

During the initial period from November 1 to 15, the focus will be on issuing warnings and providing advice. However, beginning November 15, fines will be imposed for non-compliance with safety standards.

Drivers are urged to prepare their vehicles for winter by switching to tires with at least 4 mm tread, refilling antifreeze, ensuring lights and wipers function correctly, and carrying essential emergency items such as chains and a first-aid kit.

The Traffic Police have reiterated several key safety measures: never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, adhere to speed limits, and exercise extra caution in fog, rain, snow, or icy conditions.

By promoting responsibility and preparedness, the campaign aims to reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities during Bulgaria’s harsh winter months. Authorities hope that through consistent education, enforcement, and cooperation, road users will help make Bulgarian roads safer for everyone this winter.
