The Sofia Metro announced that Line 3 will be temporarily closed to passengers on November 8 and 9, 2025, as part of preparations for the official opening of three new stations along Vladimir Vazov Boulevard. The brief suspension is also necessary for essential updates to the metro’s traffic control and management software.
According to the metro operator, the closure will begin at midnight on Saturday, November 8, and last until midnight on Sunday, November 9. Normal operations are expected to resume early on Monday, November 10. During this period, no trains will operate on Line 3, and passengers are advised to plan their travel accordingly.
The Sofia Metro company stated that alternative transport services will be provided to ensure minimal disruption for commuters. Details about these temporary routes will be released closer to the closure date, in coordination with the Sofia Municipality’s Urban Mobility Center.
Officials emphasized that the shutdown is part of a crucial phase in expanding Line 3’s capacity and efficiency. The upcoming stations—located along Vladimir Vazov Boulevard—are designed to improve connectivity to Sofia’s northeastern districts and reduce traffic congestion in key urban areas.
“The integration of the new stations and the software updates are vital steps toward enhancing passenger safety and optimizing train operations,” the metro operator said in an official statement. “We are committed to providing a reliable and modern public transport system for all residents and visitors.”
Line 3, which first opened in 2020, has been one of the most significant infrastructure projects in Sofia’s recent history. It connects major residential areas with the city center, offering a faster and eco-friendly alternative to car travel. The addition of the new stations marks another milestone in the city’s long-term urban mobility plan.
The upcoming software upgrades will modernize the train traffic control system, improving communication between trains and the central command center. This will allow for more precise scheduling, faster response times to technical issues, and overall safer operations.
Residents have been encouraged to follow updates via Sofia Metro’s official website and social media channels. Notices will also be placed at stations and on trains to inform passengers of the upcoming closure and available transport alternatives.
City officials have expressed appreciation for commuters’ understanding during the temporary inconvenience. “While the closure may cause short-term disruption, it will deliver long-term benefits through improved service reliability and expanded access,” said a spokesperson for the Sofia Municipality.
With the integration of the new stations and updated systems, Sofia’s growing metro network continues to play a central role in shaping the city’s sustainable transportation future. The expansion reflects ongoing efforts to make urban commuting faster, cleaner, and more efficient for thousands of daily passengers.
