SOFIA/BRUSSELS — Flights between Sofia and Brussels were canceled on Tuesday as Belgium was hit by a nationwide strike that forced the closure of both Brussels and Charleroi airports.
Bulgaria Air confirmed the cancellation of its scheduled flights FB 407 and FB 408 on the Sofia–Brussels–Sofia route. The airline cited official statements from Belgian aviation authorities and Brussels Airport, classifying the situation as force majeure.
In a statement released on its official Facebook page, Bulgaria Air assured affected passengers that they will be rebooked on the next available flight scheduled for October 15, 2025. The company also emphasized its commitment to assisting travelers during the disruption.
“All passengers booked on the canceled flights will receive full support and updated information regarding their travel arrangements,” the airline said. “We encourage customers to follow our official website and communication channels for the latest updates.”
The strike, which involves airport staff, air traffic controllers, and ground service workers, has led to the complete suspension of flights at both major Belgian airports. According to Belgian media reports, the industrial action is part of a broader nationwide protest impacting multiple sectors.
Transport networks across Belgium were severely affected, with disruptions extending beyond air travel. Public transportation and ground services were also hampered as employees participated in the coordinated strike.
Passengers who had planned to travel between Sofia and Brussels are now required to adjust their itineraries. Bulgaria Air noted that travelers can also contact its customer service centers for rebooking options and travel assistance.
This is not the first time Belgian strikes have affected international air traffic. However, the scale of Tuesday’s action caused a rare complete shutdown of major airports, underscoring the widespread nature of the protest.
Brussels Airport officials have advised travelers to avoid unnecessary trips to the airport and to check with airlines for rebooking or alternative arrangements. Charleroi Airport also suspended all operations for the day.
Bulgaria Air continues to monitor the situation closely and will issue further updates if the strike leads to additional schedule adjustments. Normal flight operations on the Sofia–Brussels route are expected to resume on Wednesday.
The nationwide industrial action in Belgium is expected to have a ripple effect across European travel schedules, with multiple airlines announcing cancellations and delays. Passengers are strongly advised to check flight status before departing for the airport.
As of Tuesday evening, Bulgaria Air’s website and customer service lines remain active, providing real-time updates and assistance to affected travelers.
