A serious traffic accident in Sofia left nine people injured on Wednesday afternoon when a passenger bus collided with a stationary truck on Iliyantsi Boulevard. The crash occurred at around 2:00 p.m., according to the Sofia Regional Directorate of Internal Affairs.
Authorities reported that the bus, which was transporting workers, struck the parked truck under circumstances that remain unclear. Police investigators have launched a probe into the precise cause of the collision, examining factors such as driver error, road conditions, and potential mechanical failure.
Emergency Medical Service teams responded promptly, dispatching four ambulances to the crash site. Medics provided on-site treatment to all nine injured individuals, who were passengers on the bus at the time of the impact.
The driver of the bus sustained the most serious injuries, suffering multiple traumas. He, along with two other passengers in critical condition, was transported to nearby hospitals for further medical care. Officials confirmed that the driver remains under close observation due to the severity of his injuries.
The remaining six victims sustained less serious wounds and were treated on the spot. Emergency personnel monitored their condition and ensured that no additional complications arose following the crash.
Witnesses reported a chaotic scene on Iliyantsi Boulevard, with emergency vehicles quickly securing the area. Traffic in the vicinity was disrupted as police cordoned off parts of the road to facilitate rescue operations and allow investigators to document the accident.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, with a focus on determining whether the stationary truck was properly parked and visible to approaching vehicles. Investigators are also expected to review CCTV footage from the area to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Road safety experts note that accidents involving stationary vehicles can often be attributed to limited visibility, fatigue, or lapses in driver attention. However, officials have not yet released an official statement on possible contributing factors.
The incident has renewed concerns about traffic safety in Sofia, where heavy congestion and high accident rates have long been issues of public debate. Local residents have frequently called for improved traffic monitoring, stricter parking regulations, and better enforcement of road safety standards.
As of now, all nine injured individuals are receiving medical attention, and emergency teams remain in contact with their families. Police have urged motorists in Sofia to exercise heightened caution, particularly along busy routes such as Iliyantsi Boulevard.
Authorities are expected to release further details once the investigation progresses, including whether any charges may be filed in connection with the crash.
