Residents across seven districts in Sofia will experience a temporary water supply suspension today, following an announcement from the utility company “Sofiyska Voda.”
The interruption is scheduled between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., affecting thousands of households and businesses. The planned shutdown is necessary to facilitate emergency repair work on the city’s water pipeline network.
The outage will primarily impact residents in the “Lyulin” district, specifically the 3rd, 4th, and 5th micro-districts. Additionally, the “Filipovtsi” neighborhood and both “Ovcha Kupel” 1 and 2 will be without water during the suspension period. Communities in “Suhodol” are also included in the planned restriction.
According to Sofiyska Voda, the cause of the disruption is the removal of a concealed leak discovered along the “Okolovrastnoto Shosse” near the “Fakulteta” quarter. Engineers identified the hidden damage during routine inspections and determined immediate intervention was needed to prevent further losses in the water distribution system.
The company emphasized that the repairs are vital to maintaining the integrity of Sofia’s aging infrastructure. “Timely action is necessary to avoid broader service interruptions and ensure safe, reliable water delivery to the public,” a spokesperson noted.
Authorities acknowledged that while the outage is an inconvenience, the works are aimed at strengthening long-term supply reliability. The affected neighborhoods represent a substantial portion of the capital’s western districts, highlighting the scale of the operation.
Sofiyska Voda assured residents that, should the repair activities exceed twelve hours, mobile water carriers will be dispatched to support local communities. These mobile units will provide access to drinking water in strategically placed locations.
The utility has also advised households and businesses in the affected areas to prepare in advance by storing sufficient water for essential needs. Residents are encouraged to limit usage during the outage and to monitor the company’s official channels for updates.
Water supply disruptions are not uncommon in Sofia, as ongoing infrastructure projects aim to modernize and secure the capital’s distribution network. Aging pipelines, hidden leaks, and urban expansion have increased the frequency of such interventions.
Today’s repair highlights the challenges of maintaining an extensive water system while balancing the immediate needs of residents. The swift response from Sofiyska Voda indicates a growing focus on addressing leaks promptly, reducing water loss, and improving efficiency.
By evening, officials expect full restoration of water supply across the affected districts. However, residents are reminded that water quality may temporarily fluctuate after the service resumes, a common occurrence following major repair works.
For many households, the short-term inconvenience is seen as a necessary step toward ensuring a more dependable water infrastructure for Sofia’s future.
