Sofia, Bulgaria — The Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) is set to issue its first euro-denominated commemorative coins starting in January 2025, in a historic move aligned with the country’s anticipated accession to the eurozone in January 2026.
According to the BNB’s newly released Monetary Program, the central bank will introduce several collector-focused coins in gold, silver, and copper, marking a symbolic and monetary transition toward the common European currency. This will be the first time the BNB mints euro coins, making them especially significant for numismatists and collectors.
Leading the program is a gold coin titled St. Virgin Mary – Golden Apple, which will be available in four denominations—10, 20, 50, and 100 euros. It continues the BNB’s long-standing “Christianity” series, known for its intricate designs and religious symbolism. The coin will be issued in January 2025.
That same month, a silver commemorative coin marking “125 Years of Electric Trams in Bulgaria” will be released with a face value of 10 euros. The design will pay tribute to Bulgaria’s public transport heritage, particularly in Sofia, where the country’s first electric trams began operating in the early 20th century.
In March, the central bank will mint a copper coin to commemorate the 150th anniversary of renowned Bulgarian stage actor Krastyo Sarafov, a pivotal figure in the country’s cultural and theatrical history. The coin will carry a face value of 2 euros.
April will see the release of another silver coin, this one dedicated to the Preobrazhenski (Transfiguration) Monastery, a significant religious and historical site in northern Bulgaria. Like the tram coin, it will be issued in a 10-euro denomination.
Looking further ahead, the BNB has confirmed plans for a second gold coin to be issued in October 2026. It will honor St. Ivan Rilski (John of Rila), the patron saint of Bulgaria, and will be available in a 100-euro denomination.
The bank’s commemorative coin agenda extends into 2027 and 2028. Six new designs are planned for 2027, including two gold coins — St. Martyrs Faith, Hope and Love and their Mother Sophia, and a second edition of St. Virgin Mary – Golden Apple — as well as three silver and one copper coin.
In 2028, five new issues are on the schedule, composed of four silver and one copper commemorative coin. The BNB’s gradual rollout of euro-themed coins not only serves a commemorative and artistic function but also prepares the public and collectors for Bulgaria’s full transition to the euro.
The euro adoption, long considered a milestone for the country’s economic integration into the EU, is expected to bring both financial and symbolic significance.
